Radio Gazza - Canadian Radio Update for September 26th, 2008

Lot's of buzzy new Can-Con tracks are out and about this time of year. Earlier this week the new Billy Talent record dropped and on Monday the radio world will likely bow down to the smooth sounds of the new Nickelback single "Gotta Be Somebody". In a technology reversal, I actually had an EMI rep play it for me over the phone yesterday. I felt like it was 1991 all over again. Needless to say, its another multi-format smash which will dominate the airwaves from now until Christmas.

Notable:
-XM52 Verge Music awards happened earlier this week. The big winner was The Weakerthans who picked up Best Artist and a check for $25,000 cash. Also notable is Hey Rosetta picking up Best Album
-Toronto’s Virgin Radio was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records for “Shortest Radio Show”, for the “Maurie Show” heard weekdays from 8:51am – 8:52am. Craig Glenday of Guinness World Records was in the Virgin Radio studios on Monday where he determined the show met all eligibility requirements to break the record. The guidelines state that in order to be eligible, a radio show must be stand-alone scheduled show, with its own opening jingle, a host and guests.

Radio Gazza - Canadian Radio Update for September 12th, 2008

Things are starting to shake back to normal this week as stations are now fully launched into ratings mode. The theme of most promotions this year seems to be 'give away more cash than the other guy'. Which, frankly I think listeners are fine with. Also, this weekend the Yankees open their final home-stand at the legendary "house That Ruth Built", Yankee Stadium. Sadly it won't mean anything in terms of a playoff run, but there's always next year. Mark this as the date that I officially jump on the Milwaukee Brewers bandwagon.

Notable:

-Mediabase Reporting Panel Changes took effect as of Sunday evening:
-Curve 94.3 (formerly Q94) Winnipeg has been removed from the HOT AC reporting panel during this transition stage of their new format.

Radio Gazza - Canadian Radio Update for September 5th, 2008

First week of ratings and I'm sitting at home with a bit of a flu so I'll keep it short this week. Folks are buckling down but it looks like things will normalize over the next few weeks.

Notable:

-XM52 is broadcasting all main-stage performances from Virgin-fest in Toronto this weekend

-Mike Tyler named as new MD/APD at Jack FM Toronto

-Q94 Winnipeg has flipped to "Curve 94.3 - Winnipeg's Pop Alternative". The station's launch media release states "The Pop Alternative format is a result of extensive audience research and consultation with music fans. Winnipeggers told CHUM Radio they wanted a station that played cutting-edge contemporary music without the bubble gum pop or hard rock. Out of that research, CURVE 94.3 was born - a station that will have wide appeal, especially among the target audience of adults aged 25 - 40."
